Curioddities: A Look Back
Curioddities Art Show
The Curioddities Art Show is our annual celebration of the strange, the whimsical, and the wonderfully unexpected. Each year, we transform the Henning Cultural Center into an immersive cabinet of curiosities—blending fine art with interactive elements, large-scale installations, and theatrical touches that invite visitors to step into another world.
Our curatorial approach is hands-on and highly collaborative. We actively seek out artists who are eager to experiment—whether that means painting bold, large-scale works, creating entirely new pieces tailored to the show’s theme, or lending their skills to the construction and installation of immersive environments. Some artists bring existing works that fit the Curioddities spirit; others take the opportunity to push beyond their usual scale or medium, exploring pieces that surprise even themselves.
Part of the joy of Curioddities is in the build: wall-sized murals, custom props, and environment pieces are often developed in the weeks leading up to the opening, with artists working side-by-side in the gallery space. This collaborative energy allows the show to evolve organically, blending individual voices into a cohesive, transportive experience.
Our call for participation extends beyond traditional painters and sculptors—we welcome fabricators, set designers, mixed media experimenters, and anyone with an imagination for the offbeat. By cultivating a mix of stand-alone artworks and site-specific creations, Curioddities becomes more than just an exhibition—it becomes a living, breathing curiosity shop that surprises at every turn.
