1991 - The Old Doxey Home

by Suzy Trahan

Reflections of the past prevail in Trahan's watercolor of the Doxey homestead. William Mathias Doxey built this home in the marsh isle of Grand Chenier in 1840 for his wife, Mary Elizabeth McCall. It has withstood the test of time and the ravages of storms including Hurricane Audrey in 1957. The house remained in the Doxey family for four generations before it was sold to John Paul Crain who restored it to its original beauty, retaining its nostalgic charm. It is the oldest standing home along the Gulf Coast of Southwest Louisiana.
