1978 - First Telephone Lines into Hackberry

By Will Hinds

In 1928, William T. Henning, a general store owner in Sulphur, placed a telephone circuit into service between Sulphur and Hackberry, Louisiana. This line established communications between the isolated, oil-rich marshes and the rest of the nation. It was also the first step in the formation of Cameron Telephone Company. Our 50th anniversary directory cover depicts the construction of this initial service into Hackberry.
